Sheltered Workshop

 

 

The Geauga County Board of MRDD Sheltered Workshop is located at 8090 Cedar Road, Chesterland, Ohio.

 

Individuals have the opportunity to develop skills necessary to become productive employees and to gain valuable work experience. 

 

Individuals are evaluated on a yearly basis on:

 

      Personal Hygiene/Personal Care

      Meal time activities such as setting up for meals, eating etc

      Mobility

      Emergency Drills

      Health and Safety (tripping hazards, avoiding wet floors)

      Work Skills (using tools and machinery, setting up work

      area, getting supplies, completing job duties etc.)

      Personal Responsibility

      Communication skills

      Social/Emotional skills

      Recreation/Leisure interests

      

 

The Sheltered Workshop has approximately 83 adults with disabilities who are employed on a full or part time basis.  The individuals with disabilities are employed by Metzenbaum Sheltered Industries, Inc, a non-profit agency. 

 

The main focus of the sheltered workshop is to provide task training to help individuals learn various employment skills.  Skills learned are used on a variety of jobs, to help an individual work in an enclave or a competitive employment jobIn addition to work skills, the individuals in the sheltered workshop are able to learn skills such as

 

         Personal Hygiene 

         Responsibility for one’s actions 

         How to work as a team 

         Behavior Support

 

During times when there is no work, the individuals are able to participate in alternative activities. 

 

In the Adult Services Building, activities available include arts & crafts such as painting, paper mache, making and painting plaster of paris molds, memory boxes; physical exercise such as walking, stretching, dancing; a sensory room, air mattress, games and educational presentations.

 

In the School/Administration Building the sheltered workshop utilizes the swimming pool, gym, vestibular room and the arts and crafts room. The gym provides adaptive tricycles, swings and games.

 

The individuals also participate in educational skill building such as math, reading, and writing skills.  Special presentations for the holidays are conducted.
